Get ready for it, because today you are going to choose your domain name for your blog!
For many of us, choosing a domain name can be agony. You come up with tons of ideas, nothing seems perfect, and you aren't sure if choosing one over the other will be a huge mistake.
I've totally been there. So...
I'm going to show you how to brainstorm, refine, and decide on the right domain name for YOU, all in the next hour.
Before we get started, let me make a quick point about domain names.
In the grand scheme of your blog, the domain name really doesn't matter!
It just doesn't. It will not make or break your blog.
Having an awesome domain name isn't going to attract any more traffic or customers than an average one, and a boring one isn't going to hurt your chances of success.
(Hey, you knew I was going to tell it to you straight!)
That being said, I know it can still be difficult trying to come up with the right name and there are a few things to keep in mind before you decide. So let's dive in!

Should you choose your name or a phrase?
Personally, I think choosing your name to be your domain name is a great idea! It creates your brand around YOU, and it allows you to change course later on down the road if you want to.
On the other hand, phrases or "stage names" might stand out more if they are short and memorable. Go with whichever one makes you feel good, because in the end it's not going to make much of a difference!
How to Discover Your Fun and Unique Domain Name
1. Make a list of words related to your topic.
The very first thing you should do when brainstorming your topic is to come up with a bunch of related words. If your blog is about yoga, for example, you might brainstorm words like:
- Yogi
- Namaste
- Asana
- Vinyasa
- Wellness
Starting with a list of words that relate to your blog topic it's going to make it so much easier to come up with a fun and unique blog name, I promise!
If you're having trouble coming up with related words, simply search in Google โwords related to (topic)โ.

2. Make a list of adjectives that describe you or your blog.
The next step? Brainstorm a list of words that relates to either you or your blog topic. These might be words like:
- Fun
- Flirty
- Crazy
- Happy
- Busy
- Calm
- Mama
- Wife
- Gardener
- Penny pincher
- Cyclist
Don't be afraid to ask your close friends and family for help if you need extra ideas!
After you've come up with a list of descriptive words, mix and match them with the related words from Step 1 and see if any of them have a good ring to them. For example, you might come up with:
- The Busy Yogi
- Penny Pinching Wife
- The Crazy Gardener
- Happy Wellness Lady
- The Calm Vinyasa
And if none of these strike your fancy, continue on to step 3!
3. Create short phrases about your blog topic.
If you're still struggling to come up with a fun and unique domain name, try creating some short phrases that relate to what your blog is about. Some examples might be:
- Kara dances
- Living the green life
- Pilates in my heart
- Cents with Sarah
- Tomatoes on the vine
- Wine on the weekend
- Knitting Muse
Tips for Domain Name Success
#1. Keep it short and memorable.
While my statement that your domain name doesn't matter that much still stands, it can become a problem if your URL is super long.
It's always best to keep your domain name short and memorable so people can talk about it and pass it on to others through word of mouth.
#2. Don't pick something that is really hard to spell.
My blog teeters on the edge of this tip because my first and last name are both quite different and hard to spell for many people.
There certainly are days I wish I had picked something simpler! That being said, I've never had someone tell me that my name makes it difficult for them to find my blog.
#3. Don't spend too much time deciding!
โ
This is the number one mistake most newbies make when it comes to deciding on a domain name. They stew about it forever!
Please don't do that. It's not going to get you any further along or make you more likely to succeed. Your best bet is to pick something short, sweet, and quickly and then move on to the real work. ๐
